Between temple ceremonies and the best fish in the world – experience Tokyo in its entire variety

Steep skyscrapers, glittering boulevards, bustling fish markets and world-class restaurants – that is just one side of Tokyo. Sacred temples, expansive parks, meditative tea ceremonies – that is the other. The Japanese metropolis is outstanding for its diversity and is a venerable paradise for explorers.

The best way to start a discovery tour is by having dinner at the exquisite Jiro Sushi restaurant which is the proud holder of three Michelin stars. Guests here soon realise that sushi is a fine art. The fish used is supplied daily to the Tsukiji Fish Market where the city's restaurants – and middlemen from all over the world – vie for the best products.

A temple ceremony in the Meiji Jinja Shrine, an encounter with representatives of the mysterious Noh Theatre and a Samurai master provide some unforgettable insights into Japanese culture going back thousands of years. But it goes without saying that Tokyo is also one of the most exciting shopping hotspots in the world: plenty of time therefore should be set aside for exploring the districts of Ginza and Shibuya alone. In this city, regardless of how long you stay, it will never be long enough to see everything.

An offer by Windrose Finest Travel in co-operation with Lufthansa Private Jet*

An announcement by the small but exquisite Aman Group that it would be opening a hotel in the heart of Tokyo's lively financial district was initially met with surprise. Often secluded, its establishments are world famous as luxurious oases of tranquillity – exclusive refuges for cosmopolitans in their quest for relaxation. Not for nothing does the name include the word "Aman" which means "peace" in ancient Sanskrit.

The Aman Tokyo is the first truly city hotel in the portfolio which now comprises 27 abodes: occupying the top six floors of the Otemachi Tower, a majestic monolith soaring 200 metres which was opened in December 2014 after a five-year construction period.

But even in the heart of such a dynamic metropolis as Tokyo, the Aman lives up to its name. The elegant interior cleverly combines elements of traditional Japanese design with modern minimalism – the 30-metre high atrium, for example, is modelled on a paper lantern. A purist oasis of tranquillity lends itself to being pampered after an exciting day in Tokyo – and with a view of the gardens of the Imperial Palace.
